University of Trieste PhD Scholarships 2026/2027
The University of Trieste in Italy is accepting applications for the second session of its 2026/2027 PhD admission call.
International applicants may compete for funded doctoral positions across the programmes included in the University’s 42nd PhD cycle.
Application deadline: 31 August 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Italian time
Applicants should check the individual programme annex carefully because the number of positions, research topics and selection requirements differ between programmes.
Scholarship benefits
The standard University of Trieste PhD scholarship provides:
- €16,243 per year, before the scholarship holder’s social-security deductions;
- monthly payments;
- funding renewable annually for the normal 36-month PhD period; and
- an increase of up to 50% during approved research periods abroad.
Some positions may offer a higher amount. However, the call also includes positions without scholarships, so applicants must confirm that their selected position is funded.
Who can apply?
Applicants must hold an appropriate:
- Master’s degree;
- Italian second-cycle university qualification; or
- foreign qualification that permits entry to a PhD programme in the country where it was awarded.
Candidates who have not completed their qualifying degree may apply provisionally, but they must obtain it by 31 October 2026. International qualifications are assessed by the selection committee for admission purposes.
Documents
Requirements vary by PhD programme but may include:
- passport or identity document;
- curriculum vitae;
- Master’s degree certificate;
- academic transcript;
- thesis abstract;
- research proposal;
- recommendation letters; and
- publications or other supporting documents.
Documents written in languages other than English or Italian must generally be accompanied by an English or Italian translation.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted through the University of Trieste’s Esse3 online system:

New applicants must first register and create login credentials. After signing in, select:
Menu → Home → Admission Test (restricted-access and Master’s degrees) → Select the PhD programme
Complete the form, upload the documents required by the chosen programme and pay the €30 application fee. The second-session deadline is 31 August 2026 at 1:00 p.m. Italian time. .
Where recommendation letters are required, referees have until 3 September 2026 at 1:00 p.m. to upload them through the online system.

Important note for the post
Not every PhD position is funded. Applicants should select a position clearly identified as carrying a scholarship or other financial support in the programme attachment. The standard scholarship is €16,243 annually, subject to the applicable social-security contribution, and may be increased during approved research abroad.
