University of Sannio Funded PhD Scholarships 2026/2027
The University of Sannio in Benevento, Italy, is accepting applications for its 42nd-cycle PhD programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year.
Applications are open to qualified candidates of any nationality.
Application deadline: 14 September 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Italian time
The online application system opened on 29 July 2026.
Available PhD programmes
The funded positions are available under three doctoral programmes:
- Information Technologies for Engineering
- Science and Technologies for Environment and Health
- Person, Market and Institutions
Across the three programmes, the official annexes list 19 scholarship-funded positions:
- Ten in Information Technologies for Engineering,
- Five in Science and Technologies for Environment and Health, and
- Four in Person, Market and Institutions.
- Additional places include positions without funding and places reserved for candidates who already hold scholarships from foreign governments.
Research areas
Available research areas include:
- artificial intelligence and agentic systems;
- computer science and engineering;
- energy and environmental engineering;
- climate and Earth observation;
- sustainable materials and polymers;
- tissue regeneration and biomaterials;
- environmental monitoring;
- civil and structural engineering;
- law and public institutions;
- economics, business, finance and statistics.
Applicants must select the specific research topic or curriculum stated in the relevant programme annex.
Scholarship benefits
Successful scholarship recipients receive:
- €16,243 gross per year;
- monthly payments;
- funding for three years, subject to satisfactory annual progress;
- a research budget worth at least 10% of the annual scholarship; and
- up to a 50% scholarship increase during approved research periods abroad, for a maximum of 12 months.
Students must still pay the applicable regional student-services tax and virtual revenue stamp. Accommodation, airfare and visa expenses are not listed as separate standard benefits, so the opportunity is a funded PhD scholarship not an all-expenses-paid award.
Who can apply?
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent qualification relevant to the selected programme.
Candidates who have not yet completed their Master’s degree may also apply, provided they obtain the qualification by 31 October 2026. Foreign qualifications will be assessed by the selection committee for suitability.
Documents required
Depending on the selected programme, applicants may need:
- the appropriate PhD application form;
- curriculum vitae;
- Bachelor’s and Master’s degree certificates;
- academic transcripts;
- Master’s thesis or thesis abstract;
- research proposal;
- passport or identity document;
- publications, where applicable; and
- motivation or recommendation letter.
Documents not written in English or Italian must be accompanied by a translation into one of those languages.

Applicants should:
- Register on the University of Sannio Esse3 portal. when it opens
- Log in and select Registrar’s Office.
- Choose Admission Test and then the relevant PhD programme.
- Complete the programme-specific application form.
- Upload the required documents.
- Finalise the application before the deadline.

Important note
Not every advertised PhD place carries University funding. Applicants should choose a position specifically identified as a scholarship-funded position in the appropriate programme annex.
Some externally co-funded scholarships are also conditional on the University receiving the promised funds from the sponsoring organisation.
