Current status: There is no nationwide ASUU strike announcement at this stage. The situation is developing and individual branches may take different actions.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has authorised its branches in 20 Nigerian universities to issue 14-day ultimatums to their respective governments and university authorities over unresolved implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement.

The decision was reached at ASUU's National Executive Council meeting held at the University of Abuja on 8 and 9 August 2026. The union warned that affected branches may proceed with industrial action if the outstanding issues are not addressed within their respective ultimatum periods.

Universities affected

The universities named include:

1. Nasarawa State University, Keffi
2. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai
3. University of Medical Sciences, Ondo
4. Gombe State University
5. Plateau State University, Bokkos
6. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko
7. Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma
8. Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa
9. Abia State University, Uturu
10. University of Education and Entrepreneurship, Akamkpa
11. Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo
12. Kaduna State University
13. Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil
14. Northwest University, Kano
15. Enugu State University of Science and Technology
16. Imo State University
17. Niger Delta University
18. University of Africa, Toru-Orua
19. Bayelsa Medical University
20. Taraba State University.

The dispute centres largely on what ASUU describes as uneven implementation of the 2025 agreement, including salary adjustments, academic allowances and other obligations.

Does this mean all 20 universities are already on strike?

No.

The 14-day ultimatum is a warning period. The affected branches are expected to engage their governments and university authorities before deciding on further industrial action.

Some branches are already moving individually. For example, the Taraba State University branch formally issued its own ultimatum on 13 August, to expire on 26 August 2026.
