President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment process for 3,252 verified Parent-Teacher Association teachers serving in Federal Unity Colleges into the Federal Civil Service.
The approval follows an inter-ministerial verification exercise carried out to identify eligible PTA teachers across the federal colleges. The verified teachers include Education Officers, Assistant Education Officers and Technical Instructors.
For many of the affected teachers, the announcement is significant. Some have worked in Federal Unity and Technical Colleges for many years while being employed and paid through Parent-Teacher Associations rather than the mainstream Federal Civil Service.
Why were PTA teachers needed?
PTA teachers have often been used by schools to fill gaps where the number of government-employed teachers was inadequate.
According to Education Minister Tunji Alausa, bringing the verified teachers into the public service is expected to help address teacher shortages, retain experienced personnel and strengthen teaching in the Federal Unity Colleges.
Does the approval mean every PTA teacher will automatically become a federal employee?
Not necessarily.
The approval concerns the 3,252 teachers who passed the verification process, and the Ministry still has to complete the statutory processes required before final recruitment approvals are issued.
What this means for schools
For Federal Unity Colleges, regularising experienced PTA teachers could reduce staffing gaps and give school administrators a more stable teaching workforce.
