2026/2027 University Admissions: October 31 Deadline and How to Resolve JAMB CAPS Issues

The 2026/2027 university admission exercise is entering its final stage, with public universities expected to conclude admissions by 31 October 2026.

JAMB recently restored its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) after a temporary disruption and urged institutions to accelerate admission processing to recover lost time. Candidates have also been advised to check their CAPS accounts regularly and respond promptly to admission offers.

Public university admission deadline: 31 October 2026

Private universities have until 30 November 2026, while polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions have until 31 December 2026.

How to check your JAMB CAPS admission status

Candidates should use the official JAMB e-Facility:

Open JAMB e-Facility

After logging in, open the admission/CAPS section and check your current status. JAMB states that valid admissions must ultimately appear through its system; an institution-only admission that does not reflect through JAMB is not regarded as a valid completed admission.

What does “Admission in Progress” mean?

If your status shows Admission in Progress, it does not necessarily mean there is a problem.

JAMB's official support guidance says candidates whose school has shortlisted them but whose CAPS status remains “Not Admitted” or “Admission in Progress” should check three things:

make sure their WAEC, NECO or NABTEB O'Level result is uploaded and verified;

confirm that the institution has formally recommended them to JAMB; and

check the Transfer Approval section for any course-transfer offer waiting for acceptance.

Once an institution recommends the candidate and JAMB completes its approval, CAPS can change to Admitted, allowing the candidate to accept or reject the offer.

Still showing “Not Admitted”?

Do not assume immediately that you have lost the admission.

Institutions process admissions in batches, so candidates may see different statuses at different times.

However, with the 31 October deadline approaching for public universities, candidates should now check that:

their O'Level result has been uploaded;

their institution and course details are correct;

any course-transfer offer has been accepted;

their school has actually recommended them for admission; and

there is no unresolved issue on their CAPS profile.

JAMB has specifically asked candidates who were previously awaiting the 2026 NECO result to upload or verify the result so institutions can consider them during the remaining admission period.

What if your school says you are admitted but JAMB does not?

First contact the admissions office of your university through the contact information published on the institution's official website.

Ask whether your admission has already been forwarded to JAMB for CAPS approval.

If the institution confirms that the admission has been submitted but your JAMB status still does not update, use JAMB's official support service:

JAMB Support Ticketing System

JAMB's support portal allows candidates to submit and track complaints relating to CAPS and other admission issues.

Check your course, not just the university

Candidates should also confirm the regulatory status of the specific programme they are entering.

A university being recognised by the NUC does not automatically mean every programme has the same accreditation status.

NUC publishes programme-level accreditation reports showing statuses such as:

Full

Interim

Denied. National Universities Commission

You can check programme accreditation here:

NUC Programme Accreditation Reports

Resource verification is different from accreditation

This distinction is particularly important for new programmes.

Before a university begins a new programme, NUC may conduct resource verification to determine whether adequate academic staff, facilities and other resources are available for the proposed programme. The NUC Academic Planning Directorate is responsible for processing new programmes and resource verification.

NUC has recently reminded new universities that programmes intended for the 2026/2027 session must undergo resource verification before take-off.

That does not mean a newly approved course must already have “Full Accreditation” before the first students are admitted. Full accreditation normally comes after a programme has been operating long enough to undergo the formal accreditation process.

Before accepting an admission offer

Candidates should confirm:

the admission appears on JAMB CAPS;

the course shown on CAPS is the course they intend to study;

any transfer approval has been accepted;

their O'Level result is correctly uploaded;

the university is officially recognised; and

the programme has the appropriate NUC approval/accreditation status for its stage of development.

Do not pay anyone who promises to “release” or manipulate a CAPS admission.

Registration for the 2026 NECO Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) External, commonly called NECO GCE, is still open, but the normal registration deadline is approaching.

The National Examinations Council states that normal registration will close at 12 midnight on 26 October 2026. Candidates who miss that deadline can still register during the late-registration period, but an additional ₦5,000 late fee will apply.

Normal registration deadline: 26 October 2026 at 12 midnight

Important dates

Registration opened: 7 July 2026

Normal registration closes: 26 October 2026

Late registration: 27 October – 3 November 2026

Late registration penalty: ₦5,000

Examination begins: 4 November 2026

Examination ends: 21 November 2026.

Candidates therefore have only a short period between the end of late registration and the commencement of the examination.

What is NECO SSCE External?

The SSCE External is the examination NECO conducts for private candidates, including people seeking to improve or make up deficiencies in earlier Senior School Certificate results.

NECO distinguishes it from the SSCE Internal, which is primarily conducted for final-year secondary-school students through their schools.

2026 examination format

NECO describes the 2026 SSCE External as a dual-mode examination, combining:

Hybrid Computer Based Examination (CBE); and

Pen and Paper Examination (PPE).

Candidates should therefore read the official timetable and registration guidelines carefully to know how their individual subjects will be conducted.

How to register

Registration is handled through the official NECO SSCE External portal.

Official registration portal:
https://ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng/

The portal allows new users to create an account and provides facilities for registration, payment and management of candidate information.

Candidates should use only the official NECO website or approved registration centres and avoid unofficial websites claiming to guarantee registration.

Before completing registration

Candidates should carefully confirm:

correct spelling of their names;

date of birth and other biodata;

selected examination subjects;

passport photograph;

examination centre;

payment details; and

all information printed on the registration photocard.

Errors should be corrected before registration is finally submitted where possible.

Download the official timetable

NECO has already released the 2026 SSCE External examination timetable.

The examination will run from Wednesday, 4 November to Saturday, 21 November 2026.

Candidates can access the timetable from the official NECO website:

NECO official website

What happens after October 26?

Registration does not stop immediately.

Candidates who fail to complete normal registration by 26 October can still register from 27 October to 3 November, but they will pay an additional ₦5,000 late-registration fee.

Because the examination begins the following day, 4 November, candidates should not deliberately wait for the late-registration period.

Important warning

Candidates should be careful with social-media posts advertising “special” NECO registration links or promising to register candidates after the official closing period.

The safest sources are:

NECO official website:
https://neco.gov.ng/

2026 SSCE External portal:
https://ssceexternal.neco.gov.ng/

For portal problems, the SSCE External website currently lists support@neco.gov.ng as its support contact.

NUC Accreditation: How to Check if Your University and Course Are Accredited Before Accepting Admission

Before accepting admission or paying school fees, students should confirm not only that a university is recognised by the National Universities Commission (NUC), but also that the specific programme they intend to study has the appropriate regulatory status.

The NUC now provides an online accreditation report system where members of the public can view accreditation results for individual programmes in Nigerian universities.

University approval is not the same as programme accreditation

This distinction is important.

A university may be officially recognised by the NUC, but that does not automatically mean every course offered by the institution has the same accreditation status.

NUC's Academic Planning Directorate processes applications for new academic programmes and carries out resource verification before programmes commence, while accreditation assesses programmes after they have been running and have reached the stage for evaluation.

So students should check both:

whether the university itself is recognised, and

the accreditation status of the specific programme.

What do NUC accreditation statuses mean?

NUC currently uses three main programme-accreditation outcomes:

Full Accreditation

A programme with Full Accreditation has satisfied the required accreditation standards.

NUC says Full Accreditation normally lasts five years. For a programme to earn Full status, each of four core areas — Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library — must score at least 70%.

Interim Accreditation

Interim status means the programme has deficiencies that need to be addressed.

NUC says Interim Accreditation normally lasts two years, after which the programme must be reassessed.

Interim does not mean that the programme is automatically illegal, but students should understand that improvements are required.

Denied Accreditation

Denied accreditation is more serious.

NUC states that where accreditation is denied, new admissions into the programme are stopped until identified deficiencies have been corrected and the necessary regulatory requirements are satisfied.

How to check your programme's NUC accreditation

Use the official NUC accreditation database:

Check NUC Programme Accreditation Reports

The database contains individual programme reports showing details such as:

university;

programme;

date of accreditation visit;

programme score;

accreditation status;

identified deficiencies; and

recommendations made to the institution.

For example, current NUC reports show some programmes with Full, others with Interim, and some with Denied status.

How to check whether a university itself is recognised

NUC also maintains its official Nigerian University System directory.

Check the NUC list of Nigerian universities

The directory includes federal, state and private universities recognised within the Nigerian University System.

Do not rely only on a university's advertisement or social-media page when checking its regulatory status.

New course approval versus accreditation

A newly introduced programme may not yet have undergone its first full accreditation exercise.

Before admitting students into a new programme, universities normally go through programme approval and resource verification, during which NUC assesses whether adequate staff, facilities and other resources are available for take-off.

Accreditation comes later after the programme has operated long enough to be evaluated.

Therefore, seeing no accreditation result for a very new programme does not automatically mean that the programme is unauthorised. In such a case, prospective students should confirm that NUC has approved the programme to commence.

Professional courses may require another regulator

For some professional degrees, NUC accreditation is not the only approval students should check.

Programmes such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing and other regulated professions may also be subject to requirements from their respective professional councils.

Students considering such programmes should therefore verify both NUC status and the relevant professional body's accreditation or approval.

Why this matters before accepting admission

Checking accreditation can help a student avoid discovering later that a programme has regulatory problems.

Before paying acceptance or tuition fees, confirm:

that the university appears on the NUC recognised-university list;

that the programme has approval to operate;

its latest NUC accreditation status;

the date of the most recent accreditation exercise; and

any additional professional accreditation required for the course.

JAMB Moves to Overhaul UTME with Life Skills and Critical Thinking Components

The board has inaugurated a committee to review the current format, which it acknowledges has become outdated.

What Happened
In a recent development, JAMB officials stated that the new UTME format will incorporate "life skills" and "critical thinking" components. 2026 WASSCE Results: How to Check Your WAEC Result and What to Do If It Is Withheld

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the 2026 WASSCE results for School Candidates, with 61.54% of candidates obtaining credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

A total of 1,950,726 candidates sat for the examination, while 1,200,514 candidates obtained five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics. These figures were also announced by WAEC when the results were released on 5 August 2026.

However, not every candidate has been able to access a complete result.

WAEC says:

1,834,695 candidates (94.05%) had their results fully processed and released;

116,031 candidates (5.95%) still had one or more subjects being processed; and

167,486 candidates (8.59%) had their results withheld in connection with reported cases of examination malpractice.

The 167,486 withheld results are not the same as the 116,031 results still being processed.

How to check your 2026 WAEC result

Candidates can check their results through the official WAEC Direct Result Checker.

Check your result here:
https://www.waecdirect.org/

WAEC Direct requires candidates to provide:

their 10-digit WAEC examination number;

examination year — 2026;

examination type;

e-PIN voucher number; and

result-checker PIN.

WAEC announced that candidates can obtain the necessary PIN through its official website and then use WAEC Direct to access their results.

What does “result withheld” mean?

A withheld result means WAEC has linked the candidate or examination centre to a reported examination-malpractice case that requires further consideration.

It does not automatically mean that the candidate's result has already been permanently cancelled.

WAEC has created an official portal where affected candidates can check the reason given for withholding their results and, where applicable, submit a representation for the Council's consideration.

What to do if your WAEC result is withheld

Do not pay anyone who claims that they can “release”, “upgrade” or change a withheld WAEC result.

Instead, use the official WAEC Notice of Examination Malpractice Portal:

Check a withheld result / submit a representation:
https://waecinternational.org/complaints

Enter your 2026 WASSCE examination number to check whether WAEC has placed a malpractice notice against your result.

WAEC also provides a separate section of the portal for school principals or representatives whose candidates' results have been withheld.

Check the portal again after four weeks

WAEC specifically advises candidates with examination-malpractice notices to check the complaints portal again four weeks after the release of the results for updates and information concerning their representation.

Since the 2026 results were released on 5 August 2026, affected candidates should continue monitoring the official portal rather than relying on information circulating on WhatsApp or social media.

What if your result says it is still being processed?

This is different from a withheld result.

WAEC reported that the results of 116,031 candidates, representing about 5.95% of those who sat for the examination, still had one or more subjects being processed when the results were released.

Candidates in this category should continue checking the official result portal for updates.

A result that is still being processed should not automatically be treated as a malpractice case.

What about candidates whose states owe WAEC?

There is another separate category.

WAEC said results of candidates sponsored by states indebted to the Council would not be released until the outstanding debts were settled. The Council did not publicly name the affected states in its announcement.

Therefore, an inaccessible result does not necessarily mean that the candidate has been accused of malpractice.

2026 WASSCE performance at a glance

Of the 1,950,726 candidates who sat for the examination:

1,687,378 (86.50%) obtained at least five credits with or without English Language and Mathematics;

1,200,514 (61.54%) obtained at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics;

167,486 (8.59%) had results withheld over reported examination-malpractice cases; and

116,031 (5.95%) had one or more results still being processed.

The proportion obtaining five credits including English and Mathematics was 1.42 percentage points lower than in 2025.

Avoid WAEC result scams

Candidates and parents should be particularly careful at this time.

Nobody outside WAEC can legitimately:

release a withheld result for payment;

change a candidate's grade;

remove a malpractice case;

“upgrade” a WAEC result; or

guarantee that a withheld result will eventually be released.

Use only official WAEC portals and communications from your school.

2026/2027 Post-UTME and JAMB CAPS Tracker: Forms, Results and Admission Updates

JAMB has set the minimum tolerable UTME score at 150 for universities and Colleges of Nursing, while polytechnics, monotechnics, Colleges of Agriculture, Colleges of Education and Innovation Enterprise Institutions have a national minimum of 100. Individual institutions are free to set higher cut-off marks.

Current Post-UTME and admission tracker

Institution

Current status

Important information

FUOYE

Screening portal reopened; screening underway

Course cut-offs start from 150; Medicine 280, Nursing 240, Pharmacy 230 and several other programmes have higher cut-offs. FUOYE says Law will not admit students for 2026/2027.

UNILAG

Post-UTME completed; results released

Candidates can now check their Post-UTME results. O'Level results must be uploaded on both JAMB CAPS and the UNILAG portal by 14 August 2026 to be considered for admission.

LASU

Screening/admission processing ongoing

LASU's official screening portal is active. UTME candidates need at least 195, must choose LASU as first choice and upload their O'Level result to JAMB CAPS. Admissions are also being uploaded in batches.

Federal University Lokoja

Post-UTME open

Minimum UTME score is 160. The University's published admission timetable gives 13 September 2026 as the closing date for Post-UTME registration and screening.

YABATECH

Application portal currently available

Minimum UTME score is 160 for full-time ND and B.Sc. Education applicants. The original notice stated that registration would run for four weeks from 1 July, but the official application portal currently still describes the application as open. Applicants should act immediately and confirm status before payment.

This tracker will be updated as universities release new deadlines, screening results and admission lists.

JAMB CAPS: what every candidate should do

Getting a good Post-UTME score does not mean the admission process is finished.

JAMB requires admissions to be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). CAPS allows candidates to monitor their admission status and respond to provisional admission offers.

Candidates should therefore:

Ensure their O'Level result has been uploaded to JAMB.

Log in regularly to the JAMB e-Facility/CAPS.

Open Admission Status to see whether an offer has been made.

Accept or reject an admission offer when it appears.

Continue monitoring the university portal for acceptance-fee, clearance and registration instructions.

Candidates using awaiting results must upload the final O'Level result before their institution processes their admission. JAMB's CAPS guidance specifically states that candidates with awaiting results must upload them before they can be considered for admission.

What “Admission in Progress” means

If CAPS displays Admission in Progress, it generally means the candidate's admission is still moving through the approval process.

Do not panic and do not pay anyone who claims they can “upgrade” or release the admission.

Continue checking CAPS and the institution's official admission portal.

What if CAPS says “Not Admitted”?

“Not Admitted” does not always mean the admission exercise is over.

Institutions may process admissions in batches. A candidate who has not yet received an offer should continue checking until the institution announces that its admission exercise has ended.

LASU, for example, is currently uploading its 2026/2027 admissions in batches.

Don't forget your O'Level upload

This is one of the easiest ways for an otherwise qualified candidate to lose an admission opportunity.

UNILAG has specifically warned its 2026/2027 candidates that anyone who fails to upload an O'Level result to both JAMB CAPS and the UNILAG portal by 14 August 2026 will not be considered for admission.

Federal University Lokoja similarly requires applicants to upload their O'Level results to JAMB before they can complete screening.

Important official portals

Candidates should use:

the official JAMB e-Facility for admission-status and CAPS access;

the official JAMB CAPS information page for CAPS guidance;

and the official admission or Post-UTME portal of the institution they applied to.

Avoid Post-UTME registration links sent by unknown social-media accounts. Confirm the web address from the university or polytechnic's main website before making payment.

A note for candidates changing institution or course

Some candidates may need to change institution or course where they no longer meet the cut-off mark or where their programme is unavailable.

For example, FUOYE has announced that it will not admit candidates into Law for 2026/2027 and is advising affected applicants to move to other available programmes.

JAMB provides an official Change of Course/Institution service through its portal. Available alternatives depend on programme and institutional availability.

Keep checking this page

Post-UTME deadlines and admission lists change quickly. A portal that is closed today may be reopened, while an institution still screening candidates may begin uploading admissions to CAPS without much notice.

Editorial note: This post reflects the controversy surrounding the 2014 Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise, which resulted in deaths and numerous injuries at overcrowded test centres. The questions below were reproduced from those reportedly given to candidates at one of the centres. Some appear incomplete or contain errors, possibly from the original test or their later transcription.

A Recruitment Exercise of National Shame

The 2014 Nigerian Immigration Service recruitment exercise, which resulted in numerous injuries and deaths, was described in many ways: “the killer recruitment exercise”, “a show of national shame” and “a job seekers’ reunion and parade”, among others.

Equally disturbing were the “killer questions” given to candidates during the test.

Candidates were required to answer 30 questions within 30 minutes—an average of only one minute per question. Yet, according to the instructions, each question required “a certain amount of critical reasoning and thinking on the part of the candidate”.

Many candidates, rather than leave the questions unanswered, randomly shaded options before submitting their papers.

As one candidate remarked to me after the test:

“Not even the Controller-General of the Service could answer these questions in 30 minutes.”

The questions reproduced below are not the complete set of 30 questions given to university graduates at one of the centres.

You may, however, have some fun brainstorming them.

Family Relationship Questions

A genealogist has determined that M, N, P, Q, R, S and T are the father, mother, aunt, brother, sister, wife and daughter of X, but she has been unable to determine which person has each status.

She knows that:

P and Q are of the same sex.

M and N are not of the same sex.

S was born before M.

Q is not the mother of X.

Question 1

How many of the seven people—M, N, P, Q, R, S and T—are female?

A. 3
B. 4
C. 5
D. 6
E. 7

Question 2

Which of the following must be true?

A. M is female.
B. N is female.
C. P is female.
D. Q is male.
E. S is male.

Question 3

If T is the daughter of X, which of the following must be true?

A. S is not of the same sex as T.

Question 4

If M and Q are sisters, all of the following must be true except:

A. N is male.
B. M is X’s mother.
C. Q is X’s aunt.
D. T is X’s daughter.
E. S is not X’s brother.

Question 5

If S is N’s grandfather, which of the following must be true?

A. R is N’s aunt.
B. X is P’s son.
C. M is X’s brother.
D. Q is S’s husband.
E. P is N’s aunt.

Question 6

If M is X’s wife, all of the following could be true except:

A. S is X’s daughter.
B. P is X’s sister.
C. Q is X’s sister.
D. R is X’s father.
E. N is X’s brother.

The Farmer and His Fields

A farmer has three fields—1, 2 and 3—and is deciding which crops to plant. The crops are F, G, H, I and J.

F will grow only in Fields 1 and 3. For F to grow, fertiliser X must be used.

G will grow in Fields 1, 2 and 3.
