LMU Munich Funded PhD Positions 2027
The Graduate School Life Science Munich (LSM) at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich is preparing to accept applications for its international doctoral programme.
The programme welcomes qualified graduates from around the world for research in life-science disciplines at LMU Munich, Germany.
Application opens: 1 September 2026 at 12:00 noon CET
Application deadline: 20 October 2026 at 12:00 noon CET
Reference-letter deadline: 27 October 2026 at 12:00 noon CET.
Available research areas
Research fields include:
- biochemistry and biophysics;
- bioinformatics;
- cell and developmental biology;
- genetics;
- microbiology;
- molecular biology;
- neurobiology;
- ecology and evolutionary biology;
- plant sciences;
- human biology; and
- zoology and biodiversity.
Funding
Successful applicants are generally offered doctoral positions financed through a supervisor’s research funding or an external scholarship.
The LSM doctoral programme does not charge tuition fees. However, enrolled doctoral students pay the normal LMU semester contribution, currently approximately €144 per semester. Funding arrangements may differ between projects, so applicants must check the conditions attached to each advertised position.
The opportunity should therefore be described as funded doctoral positions, not as one scholarship offering an identical stipend to every applicant.
Who can apply?
Applicants should normally hold:
- a Master of Science degree or equivalent in a relevant subject; or
- exceptionally, a four-year honours Bachelor’s degree comprising at least 240 ECTS and a written thesis.
The qualifying degree may still be in progress when the application is submitted, but it must be completed before the doctoral programme begins.
The programme is taught in English, and applicants are expected to have strong written and spoken English skills.
Documents and selection
Applicants should be ready to submit:
- curriculum vitae;
- degree certificates and academic transcripts;
- details of research experience;
- statement of motivation;
- information relating to the selected doctoral project; and
- contact details for two academic referees.
Only complete applications accompanied by two reference letters will be considered. Candidates are assessed according to academic qualifications, scientific background, research experience, motivation and references. Shortlisted applicants will attend online interviews in January 2027.

The registration link will be placed on the official application page when the portal opens on 1 September 2026. There is no application fee.
