Applications are open for the Rhodes Scholarship for West Africa 2027, offering outstanding young people from eligible West African countries the opportunity to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Oxford.
There are three Rhodes Scholarships available annually for West Africa. Eligible countries include Nigeria, The Gambia, Ghana, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Benin, Burkina Faso and several other West African countries and territories. Applications opened on 1 June and close at 23:59 GMT on 27 August 2026.
What does the scholarship cover?
The Rhodes Scholarship covers Oxford course fees and provides a living stipend. The current published stipend is £20,400 per year (£1,700 monthly) for 2025/26, although the rate for scholars beginning in October 2027 may change.
Current status: Open. Deadline: 27 August 2026 at 23:59 GMT.
It also covers the Oxford application fee, student visa and Immigration Health Surcharge, two economy flights between the scholar’s home country and the UK, and a settling-in allowance.
Applicants must meet citizenship/residency, academic and age requirements. The main age route requires applicants to be 18–24 on 1 October 2026, with alternative provisions for some professional-degree and later-graduating candidates. A First Class Honours degree or equivalent is normally expected.
