2026/2027 University Admissions: October 31 Deadline and How to Resolve JAMB CAPS Issues

The 2026/2027 university admission exercise is entering its final stage, with public universities expected to conclude admissions by 31 October 2026.

JAMB recently restored its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) after a temporary disruption and urged institutions to accelerate admission processing to recover lost time. Candidates have also been advised to check their CAPS accounts regularly and respond promptly to admission offers.

Public university admission deadline: 31 October 2026

Private universities have until 30 November 2026, while polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and other tertiary institutions have until 31 December 2026.

How to check your JAMB CAPS admission status

Candidates should use the official JAMB e-Facility:

Open JAMB e-Facility

After logging in, open the admission/CAPS section and check your current status. JAMB states that valid admissions must ultimately appear through its system; an institution-only admission that does not reflect through JAMB is not regarded as a valid completed admission.

What does “Admission in Progress” mean?

If your status shows Admission in Progress, it does not necessarily mean there is a problem.

JAMB's official support guidance says candidates whose school has shortlisted them but whose CAPS status remains “Not Admitted” or “Admission in Progress” should check three things:

make sure their WAEC, NECO or NABTEB O'Level result is uploaded and verified;

confirm that the institution has formally recommended them to JAMB; and

check the Transfer Approval section for any course-transfer offer waiting for acceptance.

Once an institution recommends the candidate and JAMB completes its approval, CAPS can change to Admitted, allowing the candidate to accept or reject the offer.

Still showing “Not Admitted”?

Do not assume immediately that you have lost the admission.

Institutions process admissions in batches, so candidates may see different statuses at different times.

However, with the 31 October deadline approaching for public universities, candidates should now check that:

their O'Level result has been uploaded;

their institution and course details are correct;

any course-transfer offer has been accepted;

their school has actually recommended them for admission; and

there is no unresolved issue on their CAPS profile.

JAMB has specifically asked candidates who were previously awaiting the 2026 NECO result to upload or verify the result so institutions can consider them during the remaining admission period.

What if your school says you are admitted but JAMB does not?

First contact the admissions office of your university through the contact information published on the institution's official website.

Ask whether your admission has already been forwarded to JAMB for CAPS approval.

If the institution confirms that the admission has been submitted but your JAMB status still does not update, use JAMB's official support service:

JAMB Support Ticketing System

JAMB's support portal allows candidates to submit and track complaints relating to CAPS and other admission issues.

Check your course, not just the university

Candidates should also confirm the regulatory status of the specific programme they are entering.

A university being recognised by the NUC does not automatically mean every programme has the same accreditation status.

NUC publishes programme-level accreditation reports showing statuses such as:

Full

Interim

Denied. National Universities Commission

You can check programme accreditation here:

NUC Programme Accreditation Reports

Resource verification is different from accreditation

This distinction is particularly important for new programmes.

Before a university begins a new programme, NUC may conduct resource verification to determine whether adequate academic staff, facilities and other resources are available for the proposed programme. The NUC Academic Planning Directorate is responsible for processing new programmes and resource verification.

NUC has recently reminded new universities that programmes intended for the 2026/2027 session must undergo resource verification before take-off.

That does not mean a newly approved course must already have “Full Accreditation” before the first students are admitted. Full accreditation normally comes after a programme has been operating long enough to undergo the formal accreditation process.

Before accepting an admission offer

Candidates should confirm:

the admission appears on JAMB CAPS;

the course shown on CAPS is the course they intend to study;

any transfer approval has been accepted;

their O'Level result is correctly uploaded;

the university is officially recognised; and

the programme has the appropriate NUC approval/accreditation status for its stage of development.

Do not pay anyone who promises to “release” or manipulate a CAPS admission.

NUC Accreditation: How to Check if Your University and Course Are Accredited Before Accepting Admission

Before accepting admission or paying school fees, students should confirm not only that a university is recognised by the National Universities Commission (NUC), but also that the specific programme they intend to study has the appropriate regulatory status.

The NUC now provides an online accreditation report system where members of the public can view accreditation results for individual programmes in Nigerian universities.

University approval is not the same as programme accreditation

This distinction is important.

A university may be officially recognised by the NUC, but that does not automatically mean every course offered by the institution has the same accreditation status.

NUC's Academic Planning Directorate processes applications for new academic programmes and carries out resource verification before programmes commence, while accreditation assesses programmes after they have been running and have reached the stage for evaluation.

So students should check both:

whether the university itself is recognised, and

the accreditation status of the specific programme.

What do NUC accreditation statuses mean?

NUC currently uses three main programme-accreditation outcomes:

Full Accreditation

A programme with Full Accreditation has satisfied the required accreditation standards.

NUC says Full Accreditation normally lasts five years. For a programme to earn Full status, each of four core areas — Academic Matters, Staffing, Physical Facilities and Library — must score at least 70%.

Interim Accreditation

Interim status means the programme has deficiencies that need to be addressed.

NUC says Interim Accreditation normally lasts two years, after which the programme must be reassessed.

Interim does not mean that the programme is automatically illegal, but students should understand that improvements are required.

Denied Accreditation

Denied accreditation is more serious.

NUC states that where accreditation is denied, new admissions into the programme are stopped until identified deficiencies have been corrected and the necessary regulatory requirements are satisfied.

How to check your programme's NUC accreditation

Use the official NUC accreditation database:

Check NUC Programme Accreditation Reports

The database contains individual programme reports showing details such as:

university;

programme;

date of accreditation visit;

programme score;

accreditation status;

identified deficiencies; and

recommendations made to the institution.

For example, current NUC reports show some programmes with Full, others with Interim, and some with Denied status.

How to check whether a university itself is recognised

NUC also maintains its official Nigerian University System directory.

Check the NUC list of Nigerian universities

The directory includes federal, state and private universities recognised within the Nigerian University System.

Do not rely only on a university's advertisement or social-media page when checking its regulatory status.

New course approval versus accreditation

A newly introduced programme may not yet have undergone its first full accreditation exercise.

Before admitting students into a new programme, universities normally go through programme approval and resource verification, during which NUC assesses whether adequate staff, facilities and other resources are available for take-off.

Accreditation comes later after the programme has operated long enough to be evaluated.

Therefore, seeing no accreditation result for a very new programme does not automatically mean that the programme is unauthorised. In such a case, prospective students should confirm that NUC has approved the programme to commence.

Professional courses may require another regulator

For some professional degrees, NUC accreditation is not the only approval students should check.

Programmes such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Nursing and other regulated professions may also be subject to requirements from their respective professional councils.

Students considering such programmes should therefore verify both NUC status and the relevant professional body's accreditation or approval.

Why this matters before accepting admission

Checking accreditation can help a student avoid discovering later that a programme has regulatory problems.

Before paying acceptance or tuition fees, confirm:

that the university appears on the NUC recognised-university list;

that the programme has approval to operate;

its latest NUC accreditation status;

the date of the most recent accreditation exercise; and

any additional professional accreditation required for the course.

FME Disowns Fake Three-Week Holiday Circular, Confirms Federal Unity Colleges Resumed September 14

The Federal Ministry of Education has disowned a viral circular claiming that students of Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria had been granted an additional three-week holiday.

The Ministry said the document was fabricated and did not originate from the Federal Ministry of Education. It reaffirmed that Monday, 14 September 2026 remained the approved resumption date for all Federal Unity Colleges.

Official position: There was no Federal Government directive extending the holiday or moving resumption to 4 October 2026.

What did the fake circular claim?

The fake document was dated 8 September 2026 and carried the reference number:

FME/SS/UNI/2026/128

It claimed that resumption had been moved from September to 4 October 2026.

The Ministry said that reference and directive were fraudulent.

Another sign that the circular was fake

The document also carried the name and signature of “Dr. (Mrs.) Aisha Garba” as Permanent Secretary.

The Ministry clarified that this was incorrect and that its Acting Permanent Secretary at the time was Dr. Mrs. Folake Olatunji David.

That was one of the clearest indications that the document was not an authentic Federal Ministry of Education circular.

What parents and students should do

The Ministry advised the public to disregard the fake document and avoid forwarding unverified school-resumption information.

Before acting on any supposed Federal Ministry of Education circular, check:

whether the announcement appears on an official government website;

whether it is published through the Ministry's established communication channels;

whether the names and positions of officials are correct;

whether reputable news organisations are reporting the same official announcement; and

whether the document contains suspicious dates, signatures or reference numbers.

The Ministry specifically urged parents, students and school administrators to verify official information before making decisions based on documents circulating on social media.

Why fake school circulars are a problem

False school announcements can cause real disruption.

A parent who believes a fake resumption notice may delay a child's return to school. A school administrator may have to spend time correcting rumours, while students may miss classes or planned academic activities.

This is why official confirmation matters, especially when a document circulates widely on WhatsApp, Facebook or other social platforms.

Official source

The Federal Government's official information platform published the Ministry's clarification on 12 September 2026.

Official statement:
FME Disowns Fake Circular on Three-Week Holiday

Federal Ministry of Education:
education.gov.ng

FME Moves Certificate Authentication Online: How to Verify Academic Credentials Without Visiting Abuja

The Federal Ministry of Education has fully automated the evaluation and authentication of academic credentials, allowing applicants to complete the process online without travelling to the Ministry's headquarters in Abuja.

The Ministry announced the reform on 8 September 2026, saying it is intended to reduce delays, improve transparency and make credential-processing services easier to access for Nigerians at home and abroad.

What services are available online?

The new Education Support Services portal handles several services.

Authentication

Use Authentication if you have a qualification obtained in Nigeria and need it verified for purposes such as:

further studies abroad;

employment abroad; or

migration and other official international requirements.

Evaluation

Use Evaluation if you obtained a qualification outside Nigeria and need the Federal Ministry of Education to determine its Nigerian equivalent for:

employment;

further education; or

other official purposes in Nigeria.

There is also a special Evaluation for NYSC route for holders of foreign Bachelor's degrees seeking NYSC mobilisation, exemption or exclusion.

The portal also provides services for Eligibility/English Proficiency Letters and Letters of No Objection.

How to apply online

Step 1: Create an account

Go to:

FME Evaluation and Authentication Portal

Create an account using a valid email address, verify your email and log in.

Step 2: Select the service you need

Choose the appropriate application:

Evaluation;

Authentication;

Evaluation for NYSC;

Eligibility/English Proficiency Letter; or

No Objection Letter.

Complete the required personal and qualification details.

Step 3: Select your documents

Indicate the qualifications and supporting documents you intend to submit.

Applicants must also state the correct number of pages being uploaded because the application fee is calculated partly from the number of pages declared.

Step 4: Make payment

The portal generates a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR).

Payment can be made through a Remita-supported channel such as:

bank;

debit card; or

USSD.

The Ministry states that payments are non-refundable.

Step 5: Upload your documents

Upload clear and legible scanned copies of the required documents.

The number of uploaded pages must agree with the number declared during payment. The Ministry warns that uploads containing more pages than declared may be rejected.

Your institution may need to send your transcript

For qualifications requiring a transcript, the awarding institution must send the official academic transcript directly to the Ministry.

The current portal specifically warns applicants not to email their own transcript. It must come from the institution's official email address.

After opening the application, applicants should provide their application number to their institution so it can be included when the transcript is sent.

The live portal currently lists:

Evaluation transcripts:

ess.evaluation@ess.education.gov.ng

Authentication transcripts:

ess.authentication@ess.education.gov.ng

Applicants should follow the transcript address displayed in their own application because the Ministry has used different official transcript addresses during the transition to the upgraded system.

What about WAEC and NECO results?

WAEC and NECO results can be verified electronically through the portal.

Applicants will need a valid result-checker or scratch-card PIN, and the system connects with WAEC or NECO for verification.

Do you still need to travel to Abuja?

No.

The Ministry specifically states that applicants are not required to visit its offices physically for verification.

Application, payment, uploading of documents, tracking and delivery of the processed result are handled online.

This is one of the main differences between the new portal and the older system, which included physical appointments at the Ministry.

Can employers verify documents?

Yes.

The new ESS portal also includes a verification facility through which an institution, employer or other recipient can check the authenticity of documents and letters issued through the system using their reference numbers.

Important tips before applying

Applicants should:

scan documents clearly before starting;

enter the correct number of document pages;

use an active email address;

ensure names on submitted qualifications are consistent;

contact their institution early if an official transcript is required;

make sure transcripts are sent from an official institutional email address, not Gmail, Yahoo or another personal account; and

keep the application number for tracking and correspondence.

What is the processing time?

The Ministry says the automated system is intended to reduce processing delays, but the current official portal does not provide one guaranteed processing time applicable to every application.

For applications requiring transcripts, processing does not properly begin until the Ministry receives and accepts the transcript from the awarding institution.
