The Government of India continues to offer fully online higher-education scholarships to students from participating African countries through the e-VidyaBharati and e-ArogyaBharati Network Project (e-VBAB) and its iLearn platform.
Under the programme, India committed 15,000 scholarships for African students and professionals to study online at participating Indian universities and institutions. Courses are available at undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate levels.
What does the scholarship cover?
For approved students, the Government of India pays the programme fees directly to the participating university.
The scholarship covers costs including:
- tuition fees;
- examination fees;
- e-learning content;
- registration fees; and
- other approved programme charges.
Students should not pay anyone to obtain the e-VBAB scholarship. The official portal states that there is no mandate for anybody to charge learners for the scholarship.
Because the programmes are delivered online, the scholarship does not provide accommodation, international travel or living allowances.
Available courses
The iLearn platform lists programmes in areas including:
- Management;
- Computer Science;
- Commerce;
- Arts and Humanities;
- Science; and
- other professional areas.
Examples currently listed include Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Computer Applications, Master of Business Administration, Master of Arts, Master of Commerce and Master of Computer Applications.
Participating institutions include Indira Gandhi National Open University, Aligarh Muslim University, Anna University, Andhra University, Alagappa University, Jamia Millia Islamia University and others.
Who can apply?
Applicants must generally:
- be nationals of a participating African country;
- be below 50 years of age when enrolment for the academic session begins;
- possess the academic qualification required for their chosen programme; and
- have sufficient knowledge of English, as English is the medium of instruction at participating universities.
Nigeria, The Gambia, Ghana, Uganda, Zambia, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Mozambique, Mauritius and several other African countries are currently listed as participating countries.
How to apply
Applicants should first register on the official iLearn portal, select a university and programme, and then complete the university’s application.
If admitted, scholarship consideration is based on recommendation by the university and the relevant Indian Mission, followed by approval from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

Important update
The e-VBAB/iLearn scholarship scheme remains active. However, the iLearn university page currently states that upcoming courses are yet to be updated. Applicants should therefore check the portal for programmes specifically marked as open for enrolment rather than relying on an old intake deadline.
Only one application per candidate is allowed in an academic session, and continued scholarship support depends on satisfactory academic progress.
