edX is an online education platform founded by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University in May 2012 to host online university-level courses in a wide range of disciplines to a worldwide audience at no charge.
You can call it a worldwide or online university if you want, and amazingly, its courses are multidisciplinary, from history, religion, philosophy, art, medicine, mathematics to science and technology, the platform got it all covered. To add to it, students who fully participate (in assignments, tests, lab works and exams) and completes any of its courses would earned a certificate.
edx has categories of certificate most of which are issued free of charge and a few at a token fees. edx is a non-profit educational platform, before its take-off, both Harvard university and MIT contributed $60 billion in resources towards its success, thus any revenue generated is used to support the program.
Since its foundation, edx has had over 29 world class universities joining the its rank to offer one or more courses. Each week, lectures in downloadable video and texts are released to students in various courses, in addition, there are course specific forums where students can interact with one another and with the professor in charge of the course.
